Individuals may seek to replace a missing tooth or teeth for a number of reasons. They may have cosmetic insecurities and/or dental function issues that often arise in the absence of a tooth.

The good news is that there is now a variety of dental treatments that can help resolve the situation.

Our San Antonio family dentist at Alon Dental Care, Dr. Kevin Sandefer, knows how someone may feel about a missing tooth, but luckily, the absence of a tooth can be remedied with a dental implant procedure.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant procedure is an artificial replacement of the root of your natural tooth. In the past, dental root restoration was done with stainless steel. With today’s technology, titanium is used to construct the root, as the body is much more accepting of this material.

Titanium is an osseous metal, meaning that it allows for the bone to grow onto the metal through integration. The charges along the surface of the titanium attract bone cells and initiate development. With a titanium implant, the increased surface area that is created can allow for the faster growth of a strong bond.

Comfort is just as significant as appearance. This procedure can help recreate a replica of your old tooth and help create a more uniform smile that will last.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

While Dr. Sandefer is experienced in dental implants, he can help you find a dedicated periodontist or oral surgeon that can begin the initial process.

First, the surgeon will conduct a series of special x-rays while carefully examining the anatomy of your teeth. A small incision will then be made in the gums where the tooth is missing. The hole is made precisely in consideration to the surrounding teeth.

Then the titanium “root form” is fitted to the incision. A healing cap will be placed above it, as per the height of the other gum tissue. Don’t worry, this part of the process is quick and easy.

Within the next few months, the bone will grow over the attachment and secure it. This bond can take between 1 to 3 months. A temporary tooth will be used during this healing period.

After the bone and implant have fused properly, the surgeon will remove the healing cap and insert an abutment to the artificial root form. This new crown will be held by this root/abutment mold and will replicate the old tooth.

After that, Dr. Sandefer will then take an impression of the abutment, and our lab will make a porcelain crown to fit your implant. Our San Antonio family dentist will also ensure the proper fit of the crown, and proceed to cement it onto the abutment as the permanent replacement tooth.
